albumen portrait of Louis Riel was almost certainly taken
followingbhis release from the Beauport (Quebec) asylum
en route to Keeseville New York in early 1878. The photograph
is in the cartes-de-visite format. This photograph is
signed by Riel in the bottom margin of the card. Such
signed photographs are extremely scarce.
